Question

Immiscible liquids: separating funel; miscible liquids: ________________

Open in App
Solution

Different separation techniques are present depending on the property of the substances to be separated.

  • Distillation is a technique of separating miscible liquids having boiling point difference greater than 25oC.
  • Miscible liquids are liquids that are miscible with each other, that will form separate layers on mixing.
  • In the process of distillation, the mixture to be separated taken in a distillation flask and heated.
  • The liquid with lower boiling point vaporises and pass through the condenser, condensed and collected in the receiver.
  • When the temperature is raised, liquid with higher boiling point vaporises then and condenses and collected in another beaker.
  • Mixture of acetone and water separated using simple distillation where the boiling point of acetone is 56oC and water is 100oC

Therefore, miscible liquids can be separated by distillation. i.e miscible liquids: distillation
