On dec 3, 1984, methyl isocyanate (MIC) leaked out from pesticide unit of Union carbide.
It killed over 2000 and injured 250, 000 persons. The disaster happened because water could get into a tank containing methyl isocyanate, due to poor maintenance or other reasons not clearly established. This caused a chemical reaction increasing the temperature and pressure inside the tank. The tank valves were triggered in an emergency to avoid blast. As a result, a large amount of toxic gases was released into the environment.
