In a bonfire why is the flame larger than that of a flame on a gas stove?

In a bonefire first smaller portion of the wood starts burning from which it spreads to larger portion and the flame is very high with large amount of heat. In gas stove the flow of the fuel is uniform throughout the burning time. So its not high.
