Question

In a Callender's compensated constant pressure air thermometer, the volume of the bulb is 1800 cc. When the bulb is kept immersed in a vessel, 200 cc of mercury has to be poured out. Calculate the temperature of the vessel.

Solution

At constant pressure, the change in the volume can be represented by:
V1T1=V2T2

The initial temperature is T1=273

The temperature required to pour out 200cc of mercury:
T2=V1V2T1

V1=1800cc,
V2=1800200cc=1600cc

T=18001600×273=307.125307
