Question

In a chemical laboratory, a student broke the thermometer while performing an experiment. Immediately, the Mercury which was spilled over was removed by the lab incharge by sprinkling sulphur on it. The teacher asked them to predict the type of change/reaction associated with the above process. Explain with appropriate reasons.

Dear student,

Its optional to use commercially available powdered sulphur to absorb the beads that are too small to see.

The sulphur does two things
  • It makes the mercury easier to see since there may be a color change to brown, and
  • It binds the mercury so that it can be easily removed and suppresses any missing mercury
