Question

In a chemistry lab, Rina took some mercury and water in two test tubes separately. Then she drained off both the liquids and on observing the empty test tubes, found some differences. Can you guess what the difference is? Explain with appropriate reasons

Solution

  • When the test tube containing water(H2O) is drained off, water droplets are visible on the inner surface of the test tube.
  • Whereas when the test tube containing mercury(Hg) is drained off, no droplets will be visible. It will be completely dry.
  • This is because in water adhesive forces are more stronger than cohesive forces.
  • Whereas in the case of mercury cohesive forces are more stronger than adhesive forces.

Cohesive forces: These are the type of forces that exist between similar types of molecules of a substance.

  • For example, Attraction between molecules of water

Adhesive forces: These are the type of forces that exist between different types of molecules of a substance.

  • For example, The attraction between paint and water molecules.
