Let the number of adults and children be $2 x$ and $3 x$ respectively.
Then, literate population $= (100 - 40)$ % of $2 x + 85$ % of $3 x$
$= (\frac{60}{100} \times 2 x) + (\frac{85}{100} \times 3 x) = \frac{6 x}{5} + \frac{51 x}{20} = \frac{75 x}{20}$
$∴$ Required percentage $= (\frac{75 x}{20} \times \frac{1}{5 x} \times 100)$ % $= 75$ %
