Solution

The correct option is C 50
Let the number of passed students =x
Number of failed students
=Total – Passed students

Number of failed students =100x

Average of the entire class
=Total marks scoredNumber of students

Total marks scored100=31
Total marks scored=31×100
Total marks scored=3100

Average of the passed students
=Total marks by the passed studentsNumber of passed students

Marks by the passed studentsx=42
Marks by the passed students=42×x
=42x

Average of the failed students
=Total marks by failed studentsNumber of failed students

Marks by failed students100x=20
Marks by failed students=20×(100x)
=200020x

Total marks scored by the passed students + Total marks scored by failed students = Total marks scored by all students

42x+200020x=3100
42x20x=31002000
22x=1100

x=110022

x=50

Therefore, 50 students passed the exam.
