Question

In a coagulation experiment , 5 ml of As2S3 is mixed with 0.1 M solution of an electrolyte ‘AB’ so that the total volume is 10 mL. It was found that all solution coagulates leaving ‘AB’ equivalent to 0.4 mL of 0.1 M solution. What is the flocculation value of AB for As2S3 sol?

Solution

The correct option is B 46
Amount of 0.1 M AB solution added is =10-5=5 mL
0.1 M AB left behind in the solution is =0.4 mL
0.1 M AB used up for coagulation =5-0.4=4.6 mL
4.6 mL of 0.1 M AB contains AB=(4.6×0.1)1000=0.46 milimoles
As total volume of sol after mixing with electrolyte is 10 mL, amount of AB required for Coagulation of 1 L of the sol= 46 mill moles, hence flocculation value = 46
