Question

In a competitive exam Sumit got 187 marks out of 250 by answering 43 questions . The question paper had 50 questions. Find how many questions had he answered correctly assuming correct answer fetches 5 marks and each wrong answer results in a penalty of 2marks

Let the number of correct answer be x

The number of wrong answers = 43 - x


Given that the total marks is 187:

5x + (-2)(43 - x) = 187

5x - 86 + 2x = 187

7x = 273

x = 39


Find the number of wrong answers:

Wrong answer = 43 - x = 43 - 39 = 4
