In a competitive Exam.

No. of candidates qualified $=84$ %

No. of candidates failed $=780$

% of failed candidates $=(100-84)=16$%

Let us assume,

the total no. of students appeared for the exam as 'x'.

No.of failed candidates% $\times$ total no. of students appeared for exam = No. of candidates failed.

we get,

$16\%\times x=780$

$\Rightarrow \frac{16}{100}\times x=780\iff 0.16x=780$

$x\Rightarrow \frac{780}{16/100}\iff \frac{780}{1}\times \frac{100}{16}\Rightarrow 48.75\times 100$

$x=4875.$

$\therefore$ total no. of students who appeared

for the Eaxmination (x) = 4875
