Solution

Compound: A compound is a pure substance in which two or more elements combine chemically in a fixed composition or ratio to give a compound.

  • Different elements combine in a fixed ratio to give a compound.
  • Example: Water (H2O)
  • In water, elements Hydrogen (H) and Oxygen (O) have combined in a fixed ratio i.e.; 2 atoms of Hydrogen have combined with one atom of Oxygen. A combination of Hydrogen and Oxygen atoms in the ratio of 2:1 can lead to the formation of water.

Therefore, in a compound, the constituent elements are present in a fixed ratio.
