Question

In a conductor, every atom contributes one free electron and the current flowing through it is 16A. The area of cross section, length and density of this conductor are 106 m2, 1 m and 5×103kg/m3. The drift velocity of the electrons (in  mm/s)  is (Atomic weight = 60, NA=6×1023, e=1.6×1019 C

Solution

Given : M=0.060 kg,A=106 m2,ρ=5000 kg/m3
I=16 A
Number of atoms per unit volume  nV=mNAVM=ρNAM
  nV=5000×6×10230.060=5×1028 atoms per unit volume
As one Cu atom contributes one free electron ,thus electron density ne=n=5×1028 electrons per unit volume
Current density J=IA=16106=1.6×107 A/m2
Drift velocity vd=Jene=1.6×1071.6×1019×5×1028=0.002 m/s=2 mm/s
