Question

In a cubic lattice, the closed packed structure of mixed oxides of the lattice is made up of oxide ions; one eight of the tetrahedral voids are occupied by divalent ions (A2+) while one half of the octahedral voids are occupied by trivalent ions (B3+). What is the formula of the oxides?

Solution

Let there be 80 O2 in the crystal.
Octahedral voids =80
Tetrahedral voids =160
A2+ ions =18×160=20
B3+ions=12×80=40
A2+:B3+:O2=20:40:80
=1:2:4.
Formula is AB2O4
