Embryo sac

A typical female gametophyte is formed by the mitotic division of the haploid functional megaspore. It therefore contains seven cells and eight nuclei that are haploid in nature.

Double fertilisation

During double fertilisation the following events take place:-

* The egg fuses with male gamete to form diploid zygote.

* One synergid cell degrades and the other directs the entry of pollen.

*Antipodal cells are degraded after fertilisation.
