Let, number of cars $=x$

So, number of bikes $=40-x$

We know a car has $4$ wheels and a bike has $2$ wheels.

So, $4$ (number of cars) $+2$ (number of bikes) $=$ total number of wheels

$4x+2(40-x)=140$

$2x+40-x=70$

$x=70-40$

$x=30$

$\therefore$ There are $30$ cars in the garage.
