Question

In a gift basket of fruits, there were apples, mangoes and pears. There were half as many pears as apples. There were 5 fewer pears than mangoes. If there are 29 fruits altogether, how many fruits of each variety are there ?

Let the number of pears be x.
Number of pears =12 (Number of apples)
Number of apples =2×Number of pears
= 2x
Also, number of pears = Number of mangoes - 5
Number of mangoes = Number of pears + 5
= x + 5
Total number of fruits = 29
x+2x+x+5=29
4x+5=29
4x=295
x=244=6
Number of pears = 6
Number of apples =2×6=12
Number of mangoes =6+5=11
