Question

In a glass slab of thickness l and refractive index μ1, a cuboidal cavity of thickness 'm' is carved and filled with a liquid of refractive index μ2(μ1>μ2). It has been found that shift produced by the given slab is zero when an observer 'A' observes an object 'B', the ratio l/m will be :

Solution

The correct option is B μ1μ2μ2(μ11)
When observer 'A' observes 'B', it can be visualized that the light ray will travel through two different media i.e. glass slab and cavity filled with liquid.
Thickness of cavity t2=m
Thickness of glass slab through which light passes, t1=(lm)
Net shift will be produced due to sum of shift produed by individual mediums:
Snet=S1+S2
or, Snet=t1(11μ1)+t2(11μ2)
( Snet=0)
0=(lm)(11μ1)+m(11μ2)
or, 0=(lm)(μ11μ1)+m(μ21μ2)
or, (lm)m(μ11μ1)=(μ21μ2)
or, (lm+1)=μ1(μ21)μ2(μ11)
or, lm=1μ1(μ21)μ2(μ11)
or, lm=μ2(μ11)μ1(μ21)μ2(μ11)
lm=μ1μ2μ2(μ11)
Why this question?

Tip: "Along the line of view 'AB'," the light ray will be effectively travelling through glass medium of thickness (lm) and liquid medium of thickness 'm'.
It intends to challenge your visualization of path travelled by light ray.
