Question

In a house 3 bulbs of 25W. Each is used for 5 hours a day. Calculate units of electricity consumed in a month of 31 days. Also, find the total expenditure if 1 unit of electricity costs 2.50.

Open in App
Solution

Step 1:

Given data:

Given, No.of bulbs (n) = 3

Power of each bulb (P) = 25W = 0.025KW

Total time of usage of bulbs (t) = 5hrs per day for 31 days

= 5 x 31

= 155 hrs.

Step 2 : Definition & formula of Power:

  1. Power is defined as the energy consumed or released per unit time period.
  2. It is given as P = Energy/ time
  3. Its unit is the watt (W).

Step 3: Calculation

The energy consumed is given as the product of no. of bulbs, power of each bulb, and time of usage

E = nPt

= 3 x 0.025 x 155

= 11.625 KWh

We have, I unit of electricity equals 1000W or 1KW

The cost of 1 unit = 2.50

Then the cost of 11.625 kWh of energy = 11.625 x 2.50

= 29.0625

The electrical energy consumed in 31 days = 11.625KWh

The cost of total electricity = 29.0625 rupees.
