Question

In a hydroelectric power station, 1000kg of water is allowed to drop a height of 100m in 1s. If the conversion of potential energy to electric energy is 60%, Calculate the power output. [Take g=10ms2]

Open in App
Solution

Step 1: Given data,

Efficiency=60%

Height=100m

Mass of water = 1000kg

Time=1s

Acceleration due to gravity g=10ms2

Step 2: To find force and potential energy,

Formula used : force=weight=mg

force=1000×10=10000N

The potential energy in terms of mass and height is,

Formula used : potentialenergy=mgh

EP=10000×100=1000000J

Step 3: To find time,

Formula used : power=enrgytime

power=10000001

=1000000watts

Step 4: To find the power that is efficiently used,

P' =60%of1000000

=60100×1000000=600000watts

Thus, the Power output is 600000watts=6×105watts.
