Question

In a meter bridge experiment, S is a standard resistance and R is a resistance wire. It is found that balancing length is l=25 cm. If R is replaced by a wire of half the length and half diameter, those of R (of the same material), then the balancing distance l (in cm) will now be

Solution

For the given meter bridge,

RS=l1100l1

Where, l1 balancing length
RS=2575=13 ...(i)

With new resistance,

R=ρl2A4=ρl×2A

R=ρlA

R=2R

RS=l2100l2

2RS=l2100l2

2×13=l2100l2 Using (i)

l2=40 cm
