Solution

When 12Ω resistance is not connected in parallel to S than we can write,
R=Sl1100l1
l1=40cm
R=S(4060)=23S __(I)

Now when 12Ω is connected in parallel to S, then
The effective resistance can be written as
1S1=1S+112=12+512SS1=12S(12+5)

Now we can write
R=Sl100ll=50cm

i.e. R=12S(12+5)×5050=12S12+5 __(II)

Using eq (II) and (I)
23S=12S12+5(12+5)2=36
24+25=3625=12S=6Ω
and R=23×6=4Ω
