Question

In a pn junction, a potential barrier of 250 meV exists across the junction. A hole with a kinetic energy of 300 meV approaches the junction. Find the kinetic energy (in meV) of the hole when it crosses the junction if the hole approached the junction from the pside.

Solution

In a pn junction, the charge distribution and electric field is shown as
When a hole enters from p side, its kinetic energy decreases as the electric field opposes its motion.

If U represents the barrier potential energy, by conservation of energy,

K.Ei=U+K.Ef

K.Ef=(300250) meV

K.Ef=50 meV

Hence, 50 is the correct answer.
