The amount of iron initially in the mixture is 6kg.

Initially, amount of the iron in 15kg of alloy = $\frac{2}{5}\times 15=6kg$
Amount of carbon in 15kg of alloy=(15-6)=9kg
After adding 3kg of iron, amount of iron=(6+3)kg=9kg
$\therefore \frac{iron}{carbon}=\frac{9}{9}=1:1$
