Question

In a plant cell OP is equal to
(a) Diffusion Pressure Deficit + Turgour Pressure
(b) Diffusion Pressure Deficit - Turgour Pressure
(c) Turgour Pressure - Diffusion Pressure Deficit
(d) Turgour Pressure - Diffusion Pressure

Solution

  • Osmotic pressure is the minimum pressure which needs to be applied to a solution to prevent the inward flow of water across the semi permeable memberane. It is also defined as the measure of the tendency of a solution to take in water by osmosis.
  • So the turgour pressure is the turgidity, is caused by the osmotic flow of water from an area of low solute concentration outside of the cell into the cell's vacuole, which has a higher solute concentration.
  • It pushes the plasma membrane against the cell wall of plant.
  • So the answer is (b) i.e. Diffusion Pressure Deficit - Turgour Pressure
