Let us consider a 5-sided polygon:

If the positions of two adjacent sides, AB and BC, are changed such that they form a line segment, we will get:

We can see that sides AB and BC form the line segment AC and so, B is not a vertex, but a point on side AC. The resulting polygon has the following sides: AC, CD, DE and EA. Therefore, the resulting polygon will have 4 sides.
