Question

in a population of 200 indiviuals 16 percentage indiviuals with recessive trait then how many individuals are heterozygous

Open in App
Solution

Dear student,
Total number of individual in the population = 200
16% individual are recessive, the frequency of recessive individual = 0.16.
According to Hardy Weinberg Equilibrium
p2 + q2 +2pq = 1 , where p2 = frequency of dominant individual, q2 = frequency of recessive individual
p2 = 0.16 so, p = 0.4
p + q = 1, where p = frequency of dominant allele. q = frequency of recessive allele
0.4 + q = 1
q = 0.6
Frequency of heterozygous individual = 2 X p X q = 2 X 0.4 X 0.6 = 0.48
Total number of heterozygous individual = 0.48 X 200 = 96
