Question

In a potentiometer arrangement, a cell of emf 1.25 V gives a balancepoint at 35.0 cm length of the wire. If the cell is replaced by anothercell and the balance point shifts to 63.0 cm, what is the emf of thesecond cell?

Solution

Given: The emf of the cell is 1.25V, the balance point of potentiometer is 35cm and after changing the cell the new balance point is 63cm.

The balance condition of a potentiometer is given as,

E 1 E 2 = l 1 l 2

Where, the emf of cell in the first case is E 1 , after changing the cell the new emf is E 2 , the balance point of potentiometer in first case is l 1 and the balance point after changing cell is l 2 .

By substituting the given values in the above equation, we get

1.25 E 2 = 25 63 E 2 =2.25V

Thus, the emf of the second cell is 2.25V.
