In a school 5/8 of the total are girls. If the number of girls is 120 more than that of boys , what is the strength of the school? How many boys are there ?

Let the numberof boys = x
let the number of girls = y
total number of students =x+y
Given y= x+120
5/8 of total students are girls.
that is y= (5/8)(x+y).
x+120=(5/8)(x+x+120)

x+120=(5/8)(2x+120).

8(x+120)=10x+600.

8x+960=10x + 600

960-600=10x-8x

360=2x
x=360/2 =180
number of boys is 180
number of girls=180+120=300.
total number of students =180+300=480
