Given: $\frac{5}{8}x$ students are boys.

Number of girls = 240

$\Rightarrow x-\frac{5}{8}x=240$

$\Rightarrow \frac{3}{8}x=240$

$\Rightarrow x=\frac{240\times 8}{3}$

$\Rightarrow x=640$

So, number of boys $=\frac{5}{8}\times 640$

$=400$

Hence, number of boys is 400.
