Question

In a science test given to 10 students, the following marks [out of 100] are recorded as: 77, 43, 39, 56, 96, 47, 53, 45, 45, 55.
Find out the mean & median of the above marks.

Solution

Mean = sum of total observationsnumber of observations

Sum of total observations = 77 + 43 + 39 + 56 + 96 + 47 + 53 + 45 + 45 + 55 = 556

Total number of observation = 10

Mean = 55.6

For median arrange in ascending order

39, 43, 45, 45, 47, 53, 55, 56, 77, 96

Since even number of observation

So the median is the average of the (n2)thand (n2+1)thobservation

i.e 5th and 6th observation

=(47+532)

= 50
