Question

In a van de Graaff generator, a spherical metal shell is to be a 15×106V electrode . The dielectric strength of the gas surronding the electrode is 5×106V/m. What is the minimum radius of the spherical shell required?

Solution

Here V=15×106V
Maximum electric field, E=10% of dielectric strength
E=10100×5×106=5×105Vm1
As we know,
E=Vr
r=VE=15×1065×105
r=30m
