Solution

Fertilizers :
Fertilizers are chemical substances that are
added to the soil to increase a crop’s
productivity.

In the given situation, since people used
excessive fertilizers in their fields, these got
carried down to the lake along with rains. As
fertilizers contain phosphates and nitrates, the
water body became enriched with these
chemicals.

The chemicals aided excessive growth of
aquatic plants and algae, while taking away
essential nutrients and oxygen from the water,
causing the fish in the lake to die.
