All atoms are attached.In a metals atoms are aranged in a lattice like 3D structure, they consist of layer of atoms that can be slide over one another.where there is a regular array of metal cations surrounded by a sea of delocalised electrons. In iron the atoms are aranged in lattice. Atoms have lot of shells of electrone surrounded by nucleus.
