Question

In an adiabatic expansion of a gas , its temperature:

Open in App
Solution

In adiabatic expansion of gas the work done (w) in positive as gas expands since in adiabatic process, heat (Q) exchanged is zero, From first law of thermodynamics,
Δu=Qw [Δu = change in internal energy]
Δu=w (as Q=O)
Thus for w>o, we get Δu<o Internal energy decreases also, Δu=nCvT, where ΔT = change in temperature.
For Δu<0 we necessary get ΔT<O
This means, temperature decreases.
