Solution

The correct option is D cathode, reduction
When an electric current is passed throughan electrolyte, the positive charged ion migrate towards cathode. At cathode it gets discharged by accepting an electron. An electrolytic cell is a electrochemical cell that undergoes a redox reaction(oxidation and reduction) when electrical energy is applied. An electrolytic cell has three components: an electrolyte and two electrodes (anode and cathode). When external current is applied to the electrodes, the ions in the electrolytes are attracted to an electrode with opposite charge. The positive charged ions migrate towards cathode, at cathode it gets discharged by accepting an electron and this process is known as reduction.
