(i)Atrium, (ii) Foramen ovale, (iii) Fossa ovalis,(iv) Patent foramen ovale.
In an embryonic circulation blood is directly shunted from the right to the left atrium through a embryonic septum called Foramen ovale. Later the flap guarding the embryonic septum fuses with interatrial septum to form fossa ovalis. The condition where the septum does not fuse is called patent foramen ovale. This is not to be confused with the common usage of the disease term, “hole in the heart”. That usage mostly refers to another disease known as the atrial septal defect.
