Question

In an experiment, carbon monoxide was passed over red hot copper oxide. CO2, so produced, weight 0.88 g and the weight of copper oxide was reduced by 0.3232 g. Calculate the atomic weight of carbon.

Open in App
Solution

2CuO+COCu2O+CO2
0.88g

Let w is the atomic weight of carbon , then moles of CO2 produced = 0.88w+32

A/q, weight loss of Cu - oxide = 0.3232g

From the balanced chemical reaction ,
Moles of CuO reacted = 2× moles of CO2

Moles of Cu2O produced = moles of CO2

Wt loss = moles of CuO×Mol.WtCuO - moles of Cu2O produced × mole Wt.Cu2O

0.3232 = 2×0.88W+32×79.50.88W+32×143

0.3232W+10.3424 = 139.92125.84

0.3232W = 14.0810.3424 = 3.7376

W=3.73760.32 = 11.8 12
