In an experiment to determine the emf E2 of an unknown cell, its emf is compared with a standard cell of known emf E1=1.12 V. The balance point is obtained at 56 cm with the standard cell and 80 cm with the unknown cell. Determine the emf of the unknown cell.

The correct option is A 1.6 V
Given:
E1=1.12 V; l1=56 cm; l2=80 cm

Let K be the potential gradient across the wire of primary circuit.

Using equation,

E1=Kl1 and E2=Kl2

E1E2=l1l2E2=E1(l2l1)

taking the value of given data, we get

E2=1.12(8056)=1.6 V

Hence, option (a) is the correct answer.
