Question

In an industrial process 10 kgs of water per hour to be heated from 20 degC to 80 deg C. Steam at 150 deg C passes from a boiler into a copper coil immersed in water. The steam condenses at coil & return to boiler at 90 deg C. How many kgs of steam is required per hour to do the job. Take specific heatof steam is 1 cal/kg/deg C & latent heat of steam is 540

Solution

Let the m Kg amount of steam required to raise the temperature of 10Kg of water from 20°Cto 80°C.The amount of heat lost by steam from 150°C to 90°C=m×1×150°-100°+m×540+m×4200100°-90° = 50m+540m+42000m=42590mThe amount of heat gained by 10Kg of water=10×1000×80°-20° =10×1000×60But amount of heat gained = amount of heat losti. e. 42590m= 10×1000×60or m= 10×1000×6042590=14Kg of steam
