Question 58
In brief state what happens when
(a) Dry apricots are left for sometime in pure water and later transferred to sugar solution?
(b) A Red Blood Cell is kept in concentrated saline solution?
(c) The Plasma-membrane of a cell breaks down?
(d) Rheo leaves are boiled in water first and then a drop of sugar syrup is put on it?
(e) Golgi apparatus is removed from the cell?
a. When dry apricots are placed in pure water, they swell as water moves from outside to the inside of the cell due to endosmosis. But, when transferred the same into the sugar solution, the cell shrinks as the water moves outside of the cell to retain the equilibrium. This is called exosmosis.
b. When a red blood cell is kept in a saline solution, the cell will shrink as the water moves from inside to outside to maintain the equilibrium concentration.
c.The breaking of plasma membrane leads to the scattering of the cell organelles as it forms the basic supporting unit of the cell.
d. When rheo leaves are boiled in water, the cells die and then if dropped in sugar syrup, no osmosis or no reaction is seen as the cells are already dead.
e. If Golgi apparatus is removed from the cell, packaging, and dispatching of materials to various targets inside and outside the cell does not occur. Formation of lysosomes is prevented. So with no lysosomes, the cell would not be able to digest or break down the materials left over from protein creation. This would create a lot of excess junk within the cell. In a situation like this, the cell wouldn’t be able to live for very long. That is because the lysosome is responsible for digesting bacteria within a cell. For example, once a white blood cell surrounds a bacterium, the lysosomes digest that bacteria.
