Question

IN CHROMIUM CHLORIDE THE CHLORIDE IONS HAVE CCP ARRANGEMENT,AND CHROMIUM ARE PRESENT IN OCTAHEDRAL HLOES.WHAT FRACTION OF OCTAHEDRAL HOLES IS OCCUPIED?

Open in App
Solution

Formula of Chromium chloride is CrCl3.
It is given that chloride ions have ccp arrangement, therefore, number of octahedral holes associated with one chloriode ion is 1 and number of tetrahedral holes associated with one chloride ion is 2.

Now, number of octahedral holes with 3 chloride ions = 3

Number of octahedral holes occupied by Cr3+ ion = 1

Therefore,

Fraction of octahedral holes occupied = 1/3
