Introduction to thorns
Thorns are the sharp and pointed structures which represent modified stems.
They are derived from internal tissues of a stem and possess a vascular bundle surrounded by a cortex of thick walled cells. They are deep seated and cannot be easily pulled out.
Thorns of Citrus, Duranta, Bougainvillea
In Citrus, Duranta, and Bougainvillea the axillary buds of the stem are modified into thorns. The thorns of Duranta bear small leaves.
