Question

In coastal areas, wind current moves from the sea towards the land during day; but during night it moves from land to the sea. Discuss the reason.

Solution

During the daytime, the land gets more heated up than the sea due to direct sunlight. Since air above the land surface gets heated faster than the air present above the water surface. The hot air on the land surface starts rising. A region of low pressure is created on land surface resulting in the movement of the air above the sea towards the low pressure area on land. Thus, wind current moves from the sea towards the land.

Similarly, during nights, while land cools down rapidly, the sea is still warm (since water takes time in absorbing and releasing heat) so at night is just the reverse. The air above the water is warmer than the air above the land surface, and it rises up creating a region of low pressure above sea. So, wind currents start to move from land to sea.
