Cellulase occurs in the American cockroach and originates in two foci: the salivary glands and the lumen of the midgut and caeca. The salivary glands are the only tissue of the alimentary tract to secrete cellulase, whereas the microflora generates it in the gut. The content of cellulase was very low in the faeces of young larvae but increased with age. Males excrete more cellulase than females. Although females on a complete diet consume additional cellulose in the form of filter paper, whereas males do not, this does not seem to affect the excretion of cellulase. So, the correct answer is ‘Bacteria in midgut’.
