In contrast to the somatic nervous system, the autonomic nervous system :
Has two-neuron efferent pathway
The autonomic nervous system has a unique sequential two-neuron efferent pathway;
1. The preganglionic neuron arising at the spinal cord or at the cranial nerves synapses on a postganglionic neuron arising at a ganglion near the target organ.
2. The postganglionic neuron will then synapse at the target organ.
