Question

In creation of big dams a large amount of vegetation is submerged under water and anaerobic decomposition releases methane which is green house gas. Why it can't be used as fuel as done in biogass plant

Solution

Dear student,

Methane is a greenhouse gas. When it gets leaked in the atmosphere, it absorbs the sun's heat and warms the atmosphere. Methane gas is harmful if exposed to the atmosphere.

In biogas plant, the methane obtained is used as a fuel. It undergoes combustion and produces energy.

Since the anaerobic decomposition releases methane directly into the atmosphere, it cannot be used as a fuel.

Regards.
