In degenerate orbitals, unpaired electrons have ______ spin
Open in App
Solution
Degenerate orbitals- They are electron orbitals that have equal energy.
According to Hund's rule of maximum multiplicity, electron pairing in orbitals of the same energy will not take place until each available orbital of a given subshell is singly occupied. (with parallel spin).
For example, in 5 d orbitals, first all the degenerated orbitals are filled with one electron with the same spin, and then afterward pairing takes place.
Therefore in degenerate orbitals, unpaired electrons have the same spin.
