In $Δ A B C, A B = 5 c m, B C = 8 c m$ and $C A = 7 c m$ . $D$ and $E$ are respectively the mid-points of $A B$ and $B C$ ,

$∴ D E = \frac{1}{2} A C = \frac{1}{2} \times 7 c m = 3.5 c m$ [Using the mid-point theorem]
