After fertilisation of the egg, a zygote is formed. The zygote divides by mitosis to form two cells, a smaller daughter cell towards the chalazal pole, called the apical cell and a larger daughter cell towards the micropylar pole called the basal cell. The basal cell divides several times transversely to form a row of cells which is called the suspensor. The lowermost i.e terminal cell of the suspensor functions as hypophysis which helps in nutrient absorption.
